WIKIPEDIA: Enterprise architecture is a well-defined practice for conducting enterprise analysis, design, planning, and implementation, using a holistic approach at all times, for the successful development and execution of strategy.

GARTNER: Enterprise architecture is the process of translating business vision and strategy into effective enterprise change by creating, communicating, and improving the key principles and models that describe the enterprise's future state and enable its evolution.

FORRESTER: Enterprise architecture consists of the vision, principles and standards that guide the purchase and deployment of technology within an enterprise.

THE OPEN GROUP: Enterprise architecture is a discipline that helps the enterprise define, develop and exploit the capabilities in order to achieve the enterprise’s strategic Intent. An ‘enterprise’ is any collection of organizations that has a common set of goals and/or a single bottom line.

TOGAF Support in Enterprise Architecture Software
TOGAF framework

When does does your Enterprise Architecture Software support TOGAF?

This article describes what kind of support you should/could expect from your enterprise architecture software. A common heard question from EA practitioners is “does your EA tool support TOGAF”. What does this actually mean?

To answer this we have to breakdown what TOGAF is and then describe what support from a tool should/could look like:

  1. First there is the TOGAF ADM, which is really the TOGAF process framework. It includes the different phases to develop enterprise architecture. So from an enterprise architecture software perspective it is really about supporting the ADM. Does the software support the ADM cycle, the different phases. Can I tailor the Adm to my specific needs (meaning can I define what needs to be produced at which phase based on my needs)?

  2. Secondly TOGAF defines around 80 different artifacts an enterprise architect can create (often created during an ADM cycle). So tying this back to the enterprise architecture software, does the software support the TOGAF defined artifacts, can I create these artifacts, and does it have templates for these artifacts?

  3. Thirdly there is the TOGAF Governance side. Usually governance breaks down into Decision Log and Compliance Assessments. So does the tool allow me to capture architecture decisions and perform compliance assessments? TOGAF doesn’t provide much detail within these areas on how to manage a decision log or how to perform alignment assessments. So that part would be up to the tool’s implementation.

  4. Onto the repository side, we get to the TOGAF Metamodel. TOGAF comes with a full flushed out metamodel and from an enterprise architecture software perspective it simply means does the tool support the TOGAF meta-model?

  5. Next to the metamodel are TOGAF Viewpoints and Views. Viewpoints are like the metadata and Views are the actual visual diagrams. So from a tooling perspective can you create visual diagrams and capture metadata for these diagrams? Now this topic could be expanded with the Open Group Archimate, which is their standard for EA diagram notations but for this article we will keep this out.

  6. Last in the list is the support for the TOGAF Continuum which describes how to classify architecture components and EA artifacts etc. The architecture components could be applications, servers, business functions etc. EA Artifacts includes Reference Library or Standards Library artifacts. So does EA software support segmenting / partitioning your architecture components and artifacts?

Please note the above is not intended as a complete list of what is required to support TOGAF but a practical view of the different areas within TOGAF enterprise architecture software could provide support for and what that support might look like
